Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of Earth Science, including the Earth's structure, natural resources, and the solar system.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Paper, colored pencils, and a globe or a map of the solar system. Prep: Familiarize yourself with the basic structure of the Earth and the order of the planets in the solar system.
Activities
1. Earth's Layers Drawing: Use the colored pencils to draw and label the layers of the Earth - the crust, mantle, and core. Discuss the characteristics of each layer.
2. Solar System Map: Use the globe or map to identify and color the planets in the solar system. Discuss the position and characteristics of each planet.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "The Earth has different layers. The outer layer is called the crust, then comes the mantle, and at the center is the core."
- "The solar system is made up of the Sun and eight planets. The planets go around the Sun in a path called an orbit."
