Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic addition and subtraction concepts through a fun bounce house activity.

Materials and Prep

  • Bounce house or trampoline
  • Soft balls or bean bags
  • Open space for bouncing

No prior knowledge is needed for this lesson.

Activities

  • Counting Bounces: Have the student jump in the bounce house and count each bounce. Encourage them to reach a specific number, e.g., 10 or 15, and then start over.
  • Addition Fun: Toss soft balls or bean bags to the student while they are bouncing. Ask them to add the number of catches they make. For example, if they catch 3 balls, and then 2 more, ask them how many in total they caught.
  • Subtraction Challenge: While bouncing, ask the student to start with a certain number of jumps and then subtract a specific number, e.g., "Start with 10 jumps and then subtract 3 jumps. How many jumps are left?"

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "When we jump in the bounce house, we can count how many times we bounce. Let's count together!"
  • "Adding is when we put things together. When you catch a ball while bouncing, we can add up how many you caught in total."
  • "Subtracting is taking things away. Let's start with a certain number of jumps and then see how many are left after we subtract some jumps."
