Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and identify basic geometric shapes and their properties while having fun with a Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban theme.
Materials and Prep
Materials needed: pencil, paper, ruler, and a copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. No prior knowledge required.
Activities
1. Create a Hogwarts Castle: Using your ruler and paper, draw a simple outline of the Hogwarts Castle. Identify and label the basic geometric shapes used in the castle's design, such as squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles.
2. Find Shapes in the Book: While reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, keep an eye out for descriptions of objects or places that can be associated with geometric shapes. Write down or draw the shapes you find.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "In the story, Hogwarts Castle has many shapes like squares, rectangles, and triangles. Can you find these shapes in the book's illustrations?"
- "Let's look for shapes in the story. What shapes do you think the windows or doors at Hogwarts might be?"
