Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic addition and subtraction using monster truck-themed activities.

Materials and Prep

Materials: Toy monster trucks, paper, crayons, and a small box

Prep: None

Activities

1. Monster Truck Addition: Use the toy monster trucks to demonstrate addition by placing two trucks together and counting the total number of trucks.

2. Monster Truck Subtraction: Use the toy monster trucks to demonstrate subtraction by starting with a group of trucks and then "driving away" a certain number, counting how many are left.

3. Monster Truck Race: Create a simple race track on the floor using paper and crayons. Have the student roll the monster trucks and count how many spaces they move forward.

  • "Let's pretend our monster trucks are friends. When we put two trucks together, how many friends do we have in total?"
  • "Now, let's imagine some trucks are going to a different place. How many trucks are left behind?"
  • "Great job! Now, let's have a race. Count how many spaces your monster truck moves forward."
