By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write a short story or paragraph with improved speed and fluency.

Materials and Prep

Materials: Pencil, paper

Prep: None

Activities

  • Warm-up: Set a timer for 5 minutes and write about your favorite animal. Focus on writing as much as you can in the given time.

  • Speed Writing Race: Choose a topic and have a speed writing race with a family member. Set a timer for 3 minutes and see who can write the most sentences about the topic.

  • Story Starter Challenge: Use a story starter such as "Once upon a time" and challenge yourself to write a complete story in 10 minutes. Don't worry about spelling or punctuation, just focus on getting your ideas down quickly.

  • "Today, we're going to work on writing stories or paragraphs a little bit faster than we usually do."
  • "We're going to practice writing as much as we can in a short amount of time."
  • "We'll have a fun writing race to see who can write the most sentences in just a few minutes."
