Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and apply basic geographical concepts through tabletop role-playing games.

Materials and Prep

  • Tabletop role-playing game rulebook
  • Dice
  • Paper and pencils
  • Map of a fictional world
  • Printed character sheets
  • Prior knowledge of basic math operations

Activities

  1. Create a fictional world:

Encourage the student to use their imagination and create a fictional world for their tabletop role-playing game. They can draw a map, name continents, oceans, and cities, and think about the climate and geography of different regions.

  2. Create characters:

Guide the student to create characters for their game. They can think about the backgrounds, skills, and abilities of their characters. Encourage them to consider how the geography of the world might influence their character's abilities.

  3. Explore the world:

Using the map created earlier, have the student navigate their characters through different regions in the game. They can encounter various geographical features like mountains, rivers, forests, and deserts. Encourage them to describe how these features affect their characters' journey.

  4. Problem-solving:

Create challenges or quests for the student's characters that require them to use their knowledge of geography. For example, they might need to cross a river or find a hidden treasure in a specific location. This will help reinforce their understanding of geographical concepts.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Geography is the study of the Earth's features, like mountains, rivers, and deserts."
  • "Maps help us understand where places are located and how to get from one place to another."
  • "When creating a fictional world, we can decide how the geography of that world looks like."
  • "Different geographical features can affect how characters in a game move and interact with their surroundings."
  • "Problem-solving in tabletop role-playing games can involve using geography to overcome challenges or find hidden locations."
