Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the concept of biomes, identify different biomes around the world, and describe the animals and monsters that inhabit these biomes.
Materials and Prep
- Tabletop Role Playing Game (RPG) rulebook
- Dice (D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20)
- World map or globe
- Pen and paper
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduction to Biomes
- Create Your Own Adventure
Begin by discussing what a biome is and explain that it is an area on Earth with similar climate, plants, and animals. Show the world map or globe and point out different biomes such as forests, deserts, mountains, and oceans.
Using the RPG rulebook, guide the student in creating their own adventure set in a specific biome. They can choose a king or queen as a character and explore the challenges and monsters they may encounter in their chosen biome.
Use the different dice to determine the outcomes of the adventure. For example, rolling a D20 can determine the success or failure of a character's action, while rolling a D4 can determine the damage caused by a monster.
After the adventure, ask the student to describe the biome they explored. Have them identify the unique features, plants, and animals they encountered during their adventure.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "A biome is like a big neighborhood for plants and animals. It's an area on Earth with similar weather, plants, and animals."
- "Let's look at this map or globe to see different biomes. Can you find the forest, desert, mountain, and ocean biomes?"
- "Now, let's create our own adventure in a specific biome. You can be a king or queen and explore the challenges and monsters in that biome."
- "Rolling the dice will help us determine what happens in our adventure. The dice will decide if we succeed or fail, and how much damage we cause to monsters."
- "After the adventure, I want you to describe the biome you explored. What plants and animals did you see? How did it feel being in that biome?"
