Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to observe and identify different plants and animals while playing outside, and understand their role in the ecosystem.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Notebook, pencil, magnifying glass
Prep: Find a safe outdoor space with plants and insects for observation.
Activities
1. Nature Scavenger Hunt: Search for different types of leaves, flowers, insects, and birds. Use the magnifying glass to observe them closely and draw them in your notebook.
2. Plant and Animal Bingo: Create a bingo card with pictures of plants and animals you might find outside. As you explore, mark off the ones you see.
3. Ecosystem Exploration: Discuss how plants and animals depend on each other for survival. Observe how insects pollinate flowers and how birds help disperse seeds.
Third Grade Talking Points
- Plants make their own food from sunlight, air, and water. They are important because they provide oxygen for us to breathe. Remember, "Plants are like little factories that make food for themselves!"
- Animals come in all shapes and sizes. They need plants for food and shelter. Some animals, like bees, help plants by carrying pollen from one flower to another. Think of it as a "pollen taxi service!"
- When we play outside, we are a part of the ecosystem. We can observe and appreciate the different plants and animals around us. Always remember to "tread lightly and respect nature."
