Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the different elements of nature and their importance in Earth Science, while having fun playing outside.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Sunscreen, hat, water bottle, notebook, pencil
Preparation: Make sure to apply sunscreen and wear a hat before going outside. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated and a notebook and pencil to record observations.
Activities
Cloud Watching: Lie on the grass and look up at the sky. Describe the shapes and movements of the clouds. What do you notice about them?
Nature Scavenger Hunt: Explore your backyard or a nearby park. Look for different types of leaves, rocks, and flowers. Take notes on what you find.
Sun and Shade Experiment: Find different areas outside where there is direct sunlight and shade. Measure the temperature in each area and record your findings.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Did you know that the clouds we see in the sky are made of tiny water droplets or ice crystals? They come in different shapes and sizes, and they can tell us about the weather."
- "Nature is full of interesting things to discover! By going on a scavenger hunt, we can learn about the different plants and rocks around us."
- "The sun gives us light and warmth, but did you know that it also creates areas of shade? Let's explore how the sun affects the temperature in different parts of our outdoor space."
