Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use statistics to analyze and interpret data related to animals, and understand how statistics can be used in studying animal populations and behaviors.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Pen, paper, computer with internet access
Prep: None
Activities
1. Research: Use the internet to find data on the population of different animal species in various habitats. Record your findings in a table or chart.
2. Data Analysis: Choose one animal species and create a bar graph to represent its population in different habitats. Calculate the mean, median, and mode of the population data.
3. Interpretation: Write a short paragraph explaining what the statistics reveal about the distribution of the animal population and any potential factors affecting it.
Eighth Grade Talking Points
- Statistics in Animal Studies: "Statistics helps us understand how many animals are in a certain area and how they are distributed."
- Population Data: "We can use statistics to study how many animals of a particular species are living in different habitats."
- Data Analysis: "By using statistics, we can calculate the average number of animals in a population and identify the most common number."
- Interpreting Statistics: "Once we have the data, we can interpret what it tells us about the animal populations and their habitats."
