Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of chemical reactions and their connection to animal life.
Materials and Prep
Materials:
- Water
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Balloons
- Plastic bottles
Prep: Make sure to have a clear workspace and adult supervision for certain activities.
Activities
1. Balloon Blow-Up: Mix baking soda and vinegar in a plastic bottle and observe the balloon inflate as a result of the chemical reaction.
2. Carbon Dioxide Test: Use the inflated balloon to test for the presence of carbon dioxide by placing it over a container with water and observing the displacement of water.
3. Animal Adaptation: Discuss how certain animals use chemical reactions in their bodies to survive, such as the production of venom or the digestion of food.
Eighth Grade Talking Points
- "Chemical reactions are like mixing different ingredients to create something new, just like when we mix baking soda and vinegar to make a gas that inflates the balloon."
- "Animals use chemical reactions in their bodies to help them survive, like how snakes use venom to catch their prey or how cows use a special stomach to digest their food."
- "Understanding chemical reactions can help us understand how animals adapt to their environment and how they interact with other living things."
