Sentence Creation: Use the animal-related words you brainstormed to create sentences that include different parts of speech. For example, "The agile cheetah runs swiftly through the grass."
Grammar Hunt: Find a paragraph about animals from a book or online. Identify and label the different parts of speech in the sentences.
Eighth Grade Talking Points
"Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or animals. For example, 'elephant,' 'tiger,' and 'ocean' are all nouns."
"Verbs are action words. They tell us what the subject of the sentence is doing. For instance, 'swim,' 'hunt,' and 'fly' are all verbs related to animals."
"Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns. They give us more information about the animal. For example, 'fierce,' 'gentle,' and 'colorful' are all adjectives."
"Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They tell us how, when, where, and to what extent an action is done. For instance, 'quickly,' 'gracefully,' and 'silently' are adverbs that can describe animal behavior."
