Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts related to bees.
Materials and Prep
- Counting cards (with pictures of bees)
- Number flashcards (1-10)
- Whiteboard or paper
- Markers or crayons
Before starting the lesson, make sure you are familiar with basic counting and number recognition.
Activities
- Counting Bees: Show the counting cards with pictures of bees to your student. Ask them to count the number of bees on each card and say the number out loud. Repeat this activity with different cards, gradually increasing the number of bees.
- Number Matching: Lay out the number flashcards (1-10) on a table or the floor. Ask your student to pick a counting card with a certain number of bees and match it with the corresponding number flashcard. Encourage them to say the number as they make the match.
- Bee Addition: Draw a simple beehive on the whiteboard or paper. Write a number sentence next to it, such as "2 + 3 = ?". Ask your student to count the number of bees in the beehive and add them together to find the answer. Repeat with different number sentences.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Bees are fascinating insects that help pollinate flowers and make honey."
- "Counting is a way to find out how many things there are. We can count bees too!"
- "The numbers we use to count are called numerals. They look like this: 1, 2, 3, and so on."
- "When we match a counting card with a number flashcard, we are learning to recognize numbers."
- "Addition is a way to find out the total when we put numbers together. Just like adding bees in a beehive!"
