Objective
The objective of this lesson is to introduce the concept of force and motion through the context of playing shooting, hunting, and war games with toy guns.
Materials and Prep
- Toy guns (nerf guns, water guns, or any other safe toy guns)
- Open play area
- Noise-canceling ear protection (optional)
Prior to the lesson, ensure that the play area is safe and free from any obstacles or hazards. If using noise-canceling ear protection, make sure it is properly fitted for the student's comfort.
Activities
- Introduction to Force: Start by discussing the concept of force with the student. Explain that force is a push or a pull that can make things move. Relate this to the toy guns they will be using in the games.
- Target Practice: Set up a target or a series of targets in the play area. Encourage the student to aim and shoot their toy gun at the targets. Discuss how the force from the toy gun propels the projectile (dart, water, etc.) towards the target.
- Moving Targets: Create moving targets by attaching objects (such as balloons or paper cutouts) to strings or sticks. Have the student try to hit these moving targets using their toy gun. Discuss how the force applied to the projectile affects its trajectory and ability to hit a moving target.
- Obstacle Course: Set up an obstacle course using various objects (pillows, chairs, etc.) in the play area. Have the student navigate through the course while shooting at targets or avoiding obstacles. Discuss how force and motion are involved in maneuvering through the course.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Force is a push or a pull that makes things move. When you shoot a toy gun, you use force to make the dart or water move."
- "The force from the toy gun propels the dart or water towards the target. It's like giving it a little push."
- "When you aim at a target and shoot, you need to use the right amount of force to hit it. Too much force can make the dart or water go too far, and too little force may not reach the target."
- "Moving targets are more challenging because they are always changing their position. You need to use your toy gun and apply force to hit them while they are moving."
- "In the obstacle course, you need to use force to move around objects and get to the finish line. It's like pushing your way through the course."
