Objective
By the end of this lesson, the first-grade student will be able to demonstrate basic library skills and apply them in Toca World.
Materials and Prep
- A computer or tablet with access to Toca World
- Internet connection
Before starting the lesson, make sure the student is familiar with navigating Toca World and understands basic computer or tablet operations.
Activities
- Introduction to the Library: Start by discussing what a library is and its purpose. Explain that Toca World also has a library where the student can find and explore different books.
- Library Scavenger Hunt: In Toca World, guide the student to the library and encourage them to explore the shelves, looking for specific types of books (e.g., adventure, animals, fantasy). Have them describe what they find and why they think it belongs in that category.
- Book Sorting: Help the student understand the concept of sorting books by different criteria. In Toca World, have them organize the books on the library shelves based on size, color, or subject. Discuss why it's important to keep books organized in a library.
- Reading Time: Select a book from the Toca World library and have the student read it aloud. Encourage them to use expressive reading and ask comprehension questions to check their understanding.
- Book Recommendations: Ask the student to recommend a book they enjoyed from Toca World's library and explain why they liked it. Discuss the importance of sharing book recommendations with others.
