By the end of this lesson, the Pre-Kindergarten student will be able to identify and describe different marine animals, while developing their reading skills.

Materials and Prep

  • Books or pictures of marine animals
  • Chart paper or whiteboard with markers
  • Paper and crayons

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduce the topic of marine animals by showing the student pictures of different marine animals from the books or pictures you have gathered.
  2. Ask the student to name the animals they see and encourage them to describe what they know about each animal.
  3. Write the names of the marine animals on the chart paper or whiteboard, and discuss their characteristics with the student. Help them identify key features of each animal.
  4. Read a book about marine animals together, pointing out the names of the animals as you go along. Encourage the student to repeat the names after you and ask them questions about the animals to check their comprehension.
  5. After reading, give the student a piece of paper and crayons. Ask them to choose their favorite marine animal and draw a picture of it. Encourage them to label their drawing with the animal's name.
  6. Once the student has finished drawing, have them share their artwork with you and explain why they chose that particular animal.
