Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to write a short descriptive paragraph about a marine animal of their choice.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencils or crayons
  • Books or online resources about marine life

Activities

  1. Introduction to Marine Life: Begin the lesson by discussing marine life with the student. Show them pictures or read short descriptions of different marine animals. Ask the student to choose one marine animal that they find interesting.
  2. Research and Descriptive Words: Help the student gather information about their chosen marine animal. Encourage them to use books or online resources to learn about the animal's appearance, habitat, diet, and any interesting facts. Together, make a list of descriptive words that can be used to describe the animal.
  3. Writing the Paragraph: Guide the student in writing a short descriptive paragraph about their chosen marine animal. Start by brainstorming a topic sentence that introduces the animal and captures the reader's attention. Then, help the student expand on the topic sentence by using the descriptive words they came up with during the research phase. Encourage them to include details about the animal's appearance, habitat, and any interesting behaviors or adaptations.
  4. Illustration: After writing the paragraph, ask the student to draw a picture of their chosen marine animal. This will help them visualize the animal and connect their writing to a visual representation.
  5. Sharing and Reflection: Have the student share their paragraph and illustration with you or other family members. Encourage them to read their writing aloud and explain why they chose that particular marine animal. Ask them questions about what they learned during the research process and how they felt while writing the paragraph.
