Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Pre-Kindergarten student will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts related to marine life.
Materials and Prep
- Counting objects: seashells, small plastic marine animals, or pictures of marine life
- Number flashcards from 1 to 10
- Whiteboard or large paper
- Markers or crayons
No prior knowledge or preparation is necessary.
Activities
- Counting Seashells: Have the student count a set of seashells and write down the corresponding numeral on the whiteboard or paper.
- Matching Numbers: Show the student a number flashcard and ask them to find and place the corresponding number of marine animal pictures or objects next to it.
- Addition with Marine Animals: Draw two groups of marine animals on the whiteboard or paper and ask the student to count each group and then combine them to find the total number of animals.
- Subtraction with Marine Animals: Draw a group of marine animals on the whiteboard or paper and ask the student to count them. Then, erase or remove a certain number of animals and ask the student to determine how many are left.
