Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic skills in a fun and engaging way by using Mario Kart as a context.
Materials and Prep
- Mario Kart video game
- Pen and paper for calculations
- Basic understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
Activities
-
Activity 1: Lap Time Calculations
Have the student choose a track in Mario Kart and complete a time trial. Ask them to record their lap times for each lap.
Then, have the student calculate the total time for all the laps by adding up the lap times. They can also calculate the average lap time by dividing the total time by the number of laps.
-
Activity 2: Coin Collection
In Mario Kart, players can collect coins during races. Ask the student to play a race and collect as many coins as possible.
After the race, have the student count the total number of coins collected. Then, ask them to divide the total number of coins by the number of laps to find the average number of coins collected per lap.
-
Activity 3: Item Probability
In Mario Kart, players can obtain various items during races. Ask the student to play a race and keep track of the items they receive.
Have the student create a table to record the different items and their frequencies. Then, ask them to calculate the probability of obtaining each item by dividing the frequency of each item by the total number of items collected.
