Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and use verbs in sentences.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- Printed list of verbs (optional)
- No prior knowledge required
Activities
-
Warm-up: Verb Charades
Act out different verbs (e.g., run, jump, dance) and have your student guess the verb. Take turns being the actor and guesser.
-
Identifying Verbs in Sentences
Write several simple sentences on the board or paper. Ask your student to identify the verb in each sentence. Discuss the role of the verb in the sentence (e.g., action, state of being).
-
Creating Verb Sentences
Ask your student to come up with their own sentences using different verbs. Encourage creativity and provide guidance if needed.
-
Verb Hunt
Take a walk around your home or outside and ask your student to point out objects or actions they see. Create sentences together using the identified verbs.
Talking Points
- "Verbs are words that show action or a state of being."
- "In the sentence 'The cat is sleeping,' the verb is 'is sleeping' because it shows a state of being."
- "Verbs can also show action, like in the sentence 'The dog is running.'
- "Can you think of other verbs that show action or a state of being?"
- "When we identify verbs in sentences, we can better understand what is happening or being described."
- "Let's practice using verbs by creating our own sentences."
