Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Grade 1 homeschool student will be able to understand basic concepts of Earth Science, including the Earth's layers, weather patterns, and natural resources.
Materials and Prep
- World globe or map
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Markers or colored pencils
- Old magazines or newspapers
Prior knowledge needed: Basic understanding of the Earth and its place in the solar system.
Activities
-
Create a Model of the Earth's Layers
Using construction paper, scissors, and glue, have the student create a model of the Earth's layers. Cut out circles representing the crust, mantle, and core. Glue them together in the correct order, labeling each layer.
-
Explore Weather Patterns
Discuss different types of weather with the student. Have them observe the weather outside and draw a picture of what they see. Encourage them to use different colors to represent different weather conditions.
-
Discover Natural Resources
Look through old magazines or newspapers with the student and identify pictures of natural resources, such as water, trees, and minerals. Cut out these pictures and create a collage or poster showcasing the importance of these resources.
