Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Grade 1 homeschool student will be able to identify and describe the different layers of the Earth.
Materials and Prep
- White paper
- Crayons or colored pencils
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Start by explaining to the student that the Earth is made up of different layers. Draw a simple diagram of the Earth on the white paper, leaving it blank inside.
-
Ask the student to color the outermost layer of the Earth in green, representing the Earth's crust. Explain that the crust is the layer we live on and it is the thinnest layer of the Earth.
-
Next, ask the student to color the layer beneath the crust in orange, representing the Earth's mantle. Explain that the mantle is thicker than the crust and is made up of hot, flowing rock.
-
Finally, ask the student to color the innermost layer of the Earth in red, representing the Earth's core. Explain that the core is the hottest and densest part of the Earth.
-
After coloring, review the different layers with the student and have them label each layer on the diagram.
