Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and count numbers from 1 to 10, and understand basic addition and subtraction concepts.
Materials and Prep
- Number flashcards (1-10)
- Counting objects (e.g., small toys, buttons, or beads)
- Whiteboard or paper and markers
Activities
-
Counting Fun:
- Show the number flashcards to your child and ask them to identify the numbers. Repeat this several times to reinforce number recognition.
- Spread out the counting objects on a table and ask your child to count them. Help them if needed, and encourage them to touch and move each object as they count.
- Ask your child to count various objects around the house, such as toys, books, or pieces of fruit. Make it a game by challenging them to find a certain number of objects within a given time.
-
Addition and Subtraction Fun:
- Draw a simple addition equation (e.g., 2 + 3) on the whiteboard or paper and use the counting objects to demonstrate the concept of adding two groups together. Let your child physically combine the objects to find the total.
- Repeat the same process for subtraction by drawing a subtraction equation (e.g., 5 - 2) and removing objects from a group to find the difference.
- Create more addition and subtraction equations using the flashcards and counting objects. Encourage your child to solve them using the physical objects.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Numbers are special symbols that we use to count things. They help us understand how many of something we have."
- "When we count, we say the numbers in order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and so on."
- "Adding means putting two groups together to find the total. For example, if we have 2 apples and 3 more apples, we can add them to find how many apples we have in total."
- "Subtracting means taking away some objects from a group. For example, if we have 5 cookies and we eat 2 of them, we can subtract to find how many cookies are left."
- "Let's practice counting and adding and subtracting with our flashcards and counting objects. It will help us become better at math!"
