Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills while incorporating them into your drawings.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencils or colored pencils
- Eraser
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Drawing with Addition
- Activity 2: Drawing with Subtraction
- Activity 3: Drawing with Multiplication
Choose a simple object to draw, such as a flower or a house. Break down the object into basic shapes, like circles, squares, or triangles. Assign a value to each shape (e.g., a circle is worth 2, a square is worth 3, a triangle is worth 1). Add up the values of the shapes you use in your drawing and write the total at the bottom of the page.
Draw a scene with multiple objects. Assign a value to each object. Start with a total value, then subtract the values of the objects as you draw them. Write the remaining value at the bottom of the page.
Choose a theme for your drawing, such as a garden or a zoo. Draw multiple instances of the same object (e.g., flowers, animals) and assign a value to each instance. Multiply the number of instances by their assigned value to find the total value of that object. Add up the total values for all objects in your drawing.
Talking Points
- When we add shapes with different values, we can find the total value of our drawing.
- Subtraction helps us figure out how much value is left after we remove shapes from our drawing.
- Multiplication helps us determine the total value of multiple instances of the same shape in our drawing.
- Let's assign values to shapes to make our drawings more interesting and challenging.
- Remember to write the total value at the bottom of your drawing to keep track of your calculations.
- Mathematics can be combined with art to create unique and creative drawings.
- Have fun exploring different ways to incorporate arithmetic into your drawings!
