Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to draw a realistic animal using basic shapes and lines.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Plain white paper
  • Eraser

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Warm-up Exercise
  • Start by practicing drawing basic shapes such as circles, squares, and triangles. Draw them freehand or use a stencil if needed. This will help you get comfortable with your pencil and hand movements.

  • Activity 2: Choose Your Animal
  • Think about your favorite animal or an animal you find interesting. It could be a lion, dolphin, elephant, or any other animal you like. Once you have decided, find a reference image of that animal to help you with your drawing.

  • Activity 3: Break It Down
  • Look closely at the reference image and try to identify basic shapes and lines that make up the animal's body. For example, if you are drawing a lion, you may notice that its head is a circle and its body is an oval. Break down the animal into these simple shapes.

  • Activity 4: Sketching
  • Using your pencil, start sketching the basic shapes and lines you identified in the previous activity. Don't worry about making it perfect at this stage, just focus on getting the proportions and overall shape right.

  • Activity 5: Adding Details
  • Once you are satisfied with the basic structure, start adding more details to your animal drawing. Pay attention to the animal's features like eyes, ears, nose, and limbs. Take your time and work slowly.

  • Activity 6: Shading and Texturing
  • To make your drawing look more realistic, add shading and textures using your pencil. Observe the reference image to see where the shadows fall and how the animal's skin or fur looks like. Use light strokes to create the desired effect.

  • Activity 7: Finalize and Share
  • Once you are happy with your drawing, go over the lines with a darker pencil or pen. Erase any unnecessary guidelines or mistakes. Finally, share your artwork with someone you trust and explain your creative choices.
