By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and analyze statistical data related to the expansion of the Roman Empire.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Internet access (optional)

Activities

  • Activity 1: Roman Empire Map Analysis

Using a map of the Roman Empire, the student will identify and label the different regions that were part of the empire. They can then calculate the percentage of the total area each region covered and create a bar graph to represent the data.

  • Activity 2: Population Growth Comparison

The student will research and gather data on the population of the Roman Empire during different time periods. They can then create a line graph to compare the population growth over time and analyze the patterns.

  • Activity 3: Trade Routes Analysis

The student will study the trade routes of the Roman Empire and collect information on the goods traded between different regions. They can then create a pie chart to represent the percentage of different types of goods traded and discuss the significance of trade for the expansion of the empire.

Talking Points

  • The Roman Empire: The Roman Empire was one of the largest and most powerful empires in history. It expanded over a vast area and lasted for centuries.

  • Regions of the Empire: The empire was divided into different regions, each with its own unique characteristics and contributions to the empire's growth.

  • Calculating Percentages: To determine the percentage of area covered by each region, divide the area of the region by the total area of the empire and multiply by 100.

  • Bar Graphs: Bar graphs are a visual representation of data using rectangular bars of different lengths. They are useful for comparing different categories or groups of data.

  • Population Growth: The population of the Roman Empire changed over time due to various factors such as conquests, migrations, and natural growth. Analyzing population data can help us understand the empire's expansion and decline.

  • Line Graphs: Line graphs show the relationship between two variables over time. They are useful for tracking changes and trends.

  • Trade Routes: The Roman Empire had an extensive network of trade routes that facilitated the exchange of goods and ideas. Analyzing trade data can provide insights into the economic aspects of the empire's expansion.

  • Pie Charts: Pie charts display data as slices of a circle, representing the proportion of each category. They are helpful for showing parts of a whole.

  • Significance of Trade: Trade played a crucial role in the expansion of the Roman Empire by promoting economic growth, cultural exchange, and political stability.
