Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the expansion of the Roman Empire and its impact on government and citizenship.

Activities

  • Create a timeline:

    Ask the student to create a timeline of the major events in the expansion of the Roman Empire. They can use their pen and paper to draw the timeline and write down important dates and descriptions of each event. Encourage them to be creative and use illustrations if desired.

  • Research and report:

    Allow the student to choose a specific aspect of the expansion of the Roman Empire that interests them, such as a particular battle or a significant figure. They can conduct research using a computer or books and then present their findings in a short report. Encourage them to include key details and explain the significance of their chosen topic.

  • Create a map:

    Provide the student with a blank map of Europe during the time of the Roman Empire. Ask them to label and color in the regions that were part of the empire at different stages of its expansion. This activity will help them visualize the territories that were conquered and understand the extent of Roman influence.

  • The Roman Empire was one of the largest and most powerful empires in history. It expanded through military conquests, diplomacy, and assimilation of conquered peoples.

  • As the Roman Empire expanded, it faced challenges in governing such a vast territory. They developed a system of government that included a Senate, Consuls, and Emperors. The Senate made laws, the Consuls led the government, and the Emperors had ultimate power.

  • Citizenship in the Roman Empire was highly valued and came with certain rights and responsibilities. Roman citizens had the right to vote, own property, and receive protection under the law. They were also expected to serve in the military and pay taxes.

  • The expansion of the Roman Empire brought new cultures, ideas, and technologies to the conquered territories. It also led to the spread of Latin language and Roman customs.

  • The decline and fall of the Roman Empire was influenced by various factors, including internal conflicts, economic issues, and invasions by barbarian tribes.
