Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of the expansion of the Roman Empire and its impact on various regions.

Materials and Prep

  • Map of the Roman Empire
  • Paper and pencils
  • Access to the internet or books for research

Prior knowledge of basic Roman history and geography would be helpful.

Activities

  • Create a timeline: Have the student create a timeline of the major events and conquests during the expansion of the Roman Empire. They can use the map as a reference and include important dates and descriptions of each event.
  • Research and present: Assign the student a specific region that was conquered by the Romans (e.g., Gaul, Britannia, Egypt). They should research the impact of Roman rule on that region and create a short presentation to share their findings.
  • Role-play: Divide the student into groups and assign each group a different role (e.g., Roman general, local ruler, conquered citizen). Have them act out a scenario depicting interactions between these characters during the expansion of the Roman Empire.
  • Create a travel brochure: Ask the student to imagine they are a travel agent promoting tourism to a region that was once part of the Roman Empire. They should create a colorful and informative travel brochure highlighting the historical sites, culture, and attractions of that region.
