Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the expansion of the Roman Empire and apply basic calculus concepts to analyze and calculate its growth.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Prior knowledge of basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Activities

  • Activity 1: Mapping the Roman Empire
Draw a map of the Roman Empire on a piece of paper. Use different colors to represent different regions or provinces. Label major cities and landmarks. This will help you visualize the extent of the empire.
  • Activity 2: Calculating the Expansion
Choose a specific time period in Roman history, for example, the reign of Julius Caesar. Research the starting and ending points of the empire's expansion during that period. Calculate the distance covered by the empire's expansion using basic arithmetic operations.
  • Activity 3: Growth Rate Analysis
Select two different time periods in Roman history, for example, the reigns of Augustus and Trajan. Calculate the average growth rate of the empire's expansion between these periods using the formula: Growth Rate = (Ending Value - Starting Value) / Time Elapsed.

  • Calculating the Expansion
    • "To calculate the expansion, we need to know the starting and ending points of a specific time period."
    • "We can use basic arithmetic operations like addition and subtraction to find the distance covered by the empire's expansion."
    • "If necessary, we can use a calculator to help with calculations."
  • Growth Rate Analysis
    • "Comparing different time periods will allow us to analyze the growth rate of the Roman Empire."
    • "We can calculate the average growth rate using the formula: Growth Rate = (Ending Value - Starting Value) / Time Elapsed."
    • "Understanding the growth rate will give us insights into how fast the empire expanded during different periods."
