Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to actively listen to music and identify different sounds and instruments.
Materials and Prep
- A device to play music (e.g., phone, tablet, computer)
- A variety of songs from different genres
- A comfortable space to sit and listen
Activities
- 1. Musical Chairs: Play different songs and have the student dance or move around the room. When the music stops, they have to find a chair to sit on. Repeat with different songs and encourage the student to notice the differences in tempo and mood.
- 2. Instrument Exploration: Show the student pictures or videos of different musical instruments. Discuss the sounds each instrument makes and ask the student to make their own sound effects using their voice or body.
- 3. Musical Storytime: Choose a song with a clear storyline and play it for the student. As they listen, encourage them to imagine the characters and events in the song. Afterward, ask them questions about what they heard and what they imagined.
- 4. Sound Scavenger Hunt: Go on a hunt around the house or outside to find different sounds. Ask the student to identify the source of each sound and describe it. For example, the sound of birds chirping, a car passing by, or water running.
Talking Points
- Sounds and Instruments: "Music is made up of different sounds. Some sounds come from instruments like the guitar, piano, or drums. Can you make a sound like a guitar? How about a drum?"
- Tempo and Mood: "Songs can be fast or slow. When a song is fast, it can make us feel excited or happy. When a song is slow, it can make us feel calm or relaxed. Let's listen to a fast song and dance around, and then listen to a slow song and see how it makes us feel."
- Imagination and Music: "Music can tell stories, just like a book. When we listen to a song, we can imagine the characters and what's happening in the story. What do you imagine when you listen to this song?"
- Listening and Paying Attention: "When we listen to music, it's important to pay attention to the sounds and try to notice different things. Let's see if we can hear any birds chirping or cars passing by. What other sounds can you hear?"
