Objective
By the end of the lesson, the toddler will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills while exploring the neighborhood during a walk.
Materials and Prep
- No materials required
- Prior knowledge of counting numbers
Activities
- Counting Houses: While walking, count the number of houses you pass by. Start from 1 and keep adding as you walk further.
- Adding Trees: Spot different trees on the way and add them up. For example, if you see 2 trees on one side and 3 trees on the other side, ask the toddler to add them together (2 + 3 = 5).
- Subtracting Cars: Whenever you see a car passing by, subtract it from the total count of cars you have seen so far. For instance, if you have seen 7 cars and another car passes by, ask the toddler to subtract 1 (7 - 1 = 6).
- Pattern Walk: Look for patterns while walking, such as repeating colors of houses or shapes of fences. Encourage the toddler to identify and continue the pattern.
Toddler Grade Talking Points
- "Look at all the houses we are passing by! Let's count them together. One, two, three... Can you say the numbers with me?"
- "Oh, I see two trees on this side and three trees on the other side. How many trees are there in total? Let's count them together and find out!"
- "We have seen seven cars so far. What happens if another car passes by? Can you tell me how many cars we will have then?"
- "Do you notice any patterns around us? Look at the colors of the houses. Can you tell me what color comes next in the pattern?"
