Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts using number blocks.
Materials and Prep
- Number blocks (1-10)
No additional preparation is needed for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Number Block Addition
Take two number blocks, for example, 3 and 4. Arrange them side by side to visually represent the addition problem 3 + 4. Count the total number of blocks to find the sum. Repeat this activity with different number blocks to practice addition.
-
Activity 2: Number Block Subtraction
Select a larger number block, for example, 8, and a smaller number block, for example, 2. Arrange them in a way that visually represents the subtraction problem 8 - 2. Count the remaining blocks to find the difference. Repeat this activity with different number blocks to practice subtraction.
-
Activity 3: Number Block Patterns
Create a pattern using number blocks, such as 1, 3, 5, 7, and so on. Ask the student to identify the pattern and predict the next number block in the sequence. Encourage them to create their own patterns using number blocks.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Arithmetic is all about working with numbers."
- "Number blocks can help us visualize addition and subtraction."
- "When we add two numbers together, we find the sum."
- "When we take away one number from another, we find the difference."
- "Patterns help us identify and predict what comes next."
