Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to write a short creative story inspired by the documentary "Rise Up: The Movement that Changed America".

Materials and Prep

  • Pen or pencil
  • Blank paper or notebook
  • Access to the documentary "Rise Up: The Movement that Changed America"

Before starting the lesson, make sure the student has watched the documentary "Rise Up: The Movement that Changed America" on History Vault.

Activities

  1. Brainstorming: Ask the student to recall their favorite parts or moments from the documentary. Encourage them to think about the emotions, characters, and events that stood out to them.
  2. Story Creation: Guide the student in creating a short creative story inspired by the documentary. Help them develop characters, a setting, and a plot. Encourage them to incorporate the themes or messages they learned from the documentary.
  3. Writing: Provide the student with the necessary materials and let them write their story. Offer assistance with spelling or sentence structure as needed.
  4. Illustration: After writing the story, encourage the student to illustrate their story using colors and drawings. This will help them visualize their narrative and engage their creativity further.
  5. Sharing: Allow the student to share their story and illustrations with you or other family members. Discuss the connections between their story and the documentary, and ask them to explain their creative choices.
