Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and use being verbs correctly in sentences.
Materials and Prep
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper or notebook
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Verb Charades: Have the student act out different being verbs (e.g., is, am, are) while others guess the verb being portrayed.
- Verb Hunt: Ask the student to find being verbs in a story or a paragraph from a book. Have them underline or circle the verbs they find.
- Verb Sorting: Write different sentences on the board or a piece of paper. Have the student identify the being verb in each sentence and write it down separately.
- Verb Relay Race: Create flashcards with different being verbs. Divide the student into two teams and have them race to pick the correct flashcard for each sentence you read out loud.
Talking Points
- "Being verbs are special words that show a state of being or existence. They tell us what someone or something is or how they are feeling."
- "Some common being verbs are 'is,' 'am,' and 'are.'"
- "We use 'is' when talking about one person or thing. For example, 'She is happy.'"
- "We use 'am' when talking about ourselves. For example, 'I am excited.'
- "We use 'are' when talking about more than one person or thing. For example, 'They are playing.'
- "Being verbs can change depending on who or what we are talking about. We need to use the right verb to match the subject of the sentence."
- "Let's practice using being verbs in sentences together."
