Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to add mixed fractions together.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen or pencil
  • Paper

Activities

  • Create your own mixed fraction addition problems. Write down two mixed fractions and solve them. Make sure to include both whole numbers and fractions in your problems.

  • Play a game of "Fraction War" with a friend or family member. Each player draws two cards from a deck of playing cards. Use the numbers on the cards to create two mixed fractions. Add the two fractions together and see who has the highest sum.

  • Find objects around your house that can be divided into fractions. For example, you can cut a pizza into different slices and add the fractions together to find the total amount of pizza you have.

Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to learn how to add mixed fractions. Mixed fractions have a whole number part and a fraction part."

  • "Let's start with a simple example. If we have 1 and 1/2, and we add 2 and 3/4, how can we find the sum?"

  • "To add mixed fractions, we first need to convert them into improper fractions. To do this, we multiply the whole number by the denominator of the fraction and add the numerator. This gives us the numerator of the improper fraction."

  • "For example, if we have 2 and 3/4, we multiply 2 by 4 (the denominator) and add 3. This gives us 11 as the numerator of the improper fraction."

  • "Next, we need to find a common denominator for the fractions. This is the same as when we add or subtract regular fractions."

  • "Once we have a common denominator, we can add the numerators together and keep the denominator the same. This gives us the sum of the fractions."

  • "Finally, we convert the sum back into a mixed fraction if needed. We divide the numerator by the denominator to get the whole number part, and the remainder becomes the numerator of the fraction."

  • "Let's practice adding some mixed fractions together. I will give you some examples, and you can solve them on your own."
