Objective
By the end of this lesson, the 2-year-old student will have fun exploring Pom Pom play in water, developing fine motor skills and sensory awareness.
Materials and Prep
- A shallow container or basin
- Water
- Pom Poms in various colors and sizes
Before starting the lesson, make sure the container or basin is clean and safe for the child to play with. Fill it with a small amount of water, enough to cover the bottom but not too deep for the child to reach comfortably.
Activities
- Water Scooping: Show the child how to use a small cup or spoon to scoop water from the basin and pour it back in. Encourage them to explore the sensation of water and observe how it interacts with the Pom Poms.
- Pom Pom Fishing: Place the Pom Poms in the water and demonstrate how to use hands or a small net to "fish" them out. Encourage the child to pick up the Pom Poms and feel their texture.
- Pom Pom Sorting: Guide the child in sorting the Pom Poms by color or size. Encourage them to describe the differences they notice and categorize the Pom Poms accordingly.
- Water Transfer: Provide additional containers or cups and show the child how to transfer water from one container to another using their hands or a small scoop. This activity helps develop hand-eye coordination.
- Pom Pom Splash: Allow the child to freely explore the Pom Poms in the water, encouraging them to splash, squeeze, and have fun with the sensory experience. Observe their reactions and engage in open-ended conversation about what they are doing.
Talking Points
- "Look at the colorful Pom Poms! They are so soft and fluffy."
- "Can you scoop some water with the cup? Let's pour it back in the basin."
- "Oh, you caught a Pom Pom! It feels wet and squishy, doesn't it?"
- "Can you find a big Pom Pom? How about a small one? Let's sort them together."
- "Wow, you transferred water from one cup to another! Great job!"
- "Splash, splash! It's so much fun to play with the Pom Poms in the water!"
