Objective
By the end of this lesson, the 3 year old homeschool student will be able to understand the concept of magnets and enjoy playing a magnetic fishing game.
Materials and Prep
- Magnetic fishing rod (can be made by attaching a magnet to a string or stick)
- Paper clips or small metal objects
- Large container or basin filled with water
- Construction paper or cardboard
- Markers or crayons
- Scissors
Before the lesson, cut out fish shapes from the construction paper or cardboard, and draw or color them to make them look like fish. Attach paper clips to the fish shapes.
Activities
- Activity 1: Magnetic Fishing - Show the student how to use the magnetic fishing rod to catch the fish in the water. Encourage them to try catching the fish themselves.
- Activity 2: Counting and Sorting - Have the student count the number of fish they catch and sort them by color or size.
- Activity 3: Magnetic Art - Provide the student with paper clips and let them experiment with sticking them to different objects around the room. Encourage them to create artwork using the paper clips as magnets.
- Activity 4: Magnetic Maze - Create a simple maze on a piece of paper or cardboard, and have the student use the magnetic fishing rod to navigate through the maze by attracting the paper clips.
Talking Points
- "Magnets are special objects that can attract or pull certain things towards them."
- "The fishing rod has a magnet at the end, which is why it can catch the fish made of paper clips."
- "When we catch the fish, we can count how many we caught. Let's see how many fish you can catch!"
- "We can sort the fish by their colors or sizes. Can you find all the red fish? How about the big fish?"
- "The paper clips can stick to other metal objects because they are attracted to them, just like the magnet attracts the fish."
- "Let's use the paper clips to create a special artwork. You can stick them to the paper and make different shapes and patterns."
- "In the maze, we need to guide the fishing rod through the path by attracting the paper clips. Can you help me find the way?"
