Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and perform basic addition with numbers up to 10.
Materials and Prep
- Counting objects (could be toys, buttons, or any small items)
- Pen and paper (optional)
No special preparation is needed for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Counting and Adding Objects
Give the student a set of counting objects and ask them to count them. Then, ask them to add more objects to the set and count again. Encourage them to say the numbers out loud as they count and then give the total sum of the objects. - Activity 2: Number Line Addition
Draw a simple number line on a piece of paper or on the floor using tape. Use numbers 1 to 10. Ask the student to stand on a number and then take a step forward or backward to perform addition. For example, if they start on number 3 and take 2 steps forward, they should end up on number 5. Repeat this activity with different starting numbers and different step sizes. - Activity 3: Addition with Fingers
Ask the student to hold up a certain number of fingers on one hand, and then hold up a certain number of fingers on the other hand. Encourage them to count all the fingers together and give the total sum.
Talking Points
- "Addition is when we put two or more numbers together to find the total."
- "When we add, we count all the numbers together."
- "Let's count the objects together and see how many there are in total."
- "Now, let's add more objects and count again. What is the new total?"
- "We can use a number line to help us add. Let's start at a number and take steps forward or backward to find the answer."
- "Look at your fingers. How many are up on one hand? How many are up on the other hand? Let's count them all together to find the total."
- "Great job! You are becoming an addition expert!"
