Objective
By the end of this lesson, the 5-year-old homeschool student will have a basic understanding of preparing and serving food.
Materials and Prep
- Play kitchen or real kitchen with child-safe utensils and ingredients
- Apron or smock
- Paper and crayons/markers
- Books about food and cooking
Before starting the lesson, make sure the kitchen area is clean and safe for the child. Familiarize yourself with basic kitchen safety rules to teach the student.
Activities
- Activity 1: Play Kitchen - Encourage the student to pretend to be a chef in their play kitchen. Provide them with play food and utensils. Let them create their own recipes and serve imaginary meals to their stuffed animals or family members.
- Activity 2: Real Kitchen - Assist the student in preparing a simple snack or meal. Choose a recipe that involves minimal cutting or heat. Let the student measure ingredients, mix them together, and serve the final product.
- Activity 3: Food Art - Give the student paper and crayons/markers. Ask them to draw their favorite food or a meal they would like to prepare. Encourage creativity and imagination.
- Activity 4: Story Time - Read books about food and cooking to the student. Discuss the different types of food, where they come from, and how they are prepared and served.
