Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to count and calculate the number of rollercoasters in a given scenario using basic arithmetic operations.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper or notebook
Before starting this lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Activities
- Activity 1: Counting Rollercoasters
- Activity 2: Adding Rollercoasters
- Activity 3: Subtracting Rollercoasters
- Activity 4: Multiplying Rollercoasters
- Activity 5: Dividing Rollercoasters
Take a virtual tour of a theme park and observe the rollercoasters. Write down the names of the rollercoasters and their heights.
Imagine you are designing a new theme park. Create a list of rollercoasters you want to include and their heights. Add up the heights of all the rollercoasters to find the total height.
Now, imagine some of the rollercoasters in your theme park need maintenance and will be temporarily closed. Subtract the heights of the closed rollercoasters from the total height to find the new total height.
Think about a scenario where you have multiple theme parks with the same number of rollercoasters. Multiply the number of rollercoasters in one park by the number of parks to find the total number of rollercoasters.
Consider a situation where you have a total number of rollercoasters and you want to divide them equally among a certain number of parks. Divide the total number of rollercoasters by the number of parks to find out how many rollercoasters each park will have.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "In mathematics, we use basic arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve problems."
- "When counting rollercoasters, we can use addition to find the total height of multiple rollercoasters."
- "Subtraction helps us find the new total height when some rollercoasters are closed or removed."
- "Multiplication allows us to calculate the total number of rollercoasters when we have multiple parks with the same number of rollercoasters."
- "Division helps us distribute the total number of rollercoasters equally among a certain number of parks."
