Objective
By the end of this lesson, Kelsey will be able to understand and practice addition using a 10 frame.
Materials and Prep
Materials needed: 10 frame template (drawn on paper), markers or crayons.
No prior knowledge needed, just enthusiasm to learn!
Activities
Color the squares: Have Kelsey color the squares on the 10 frame with different colors. This helps in visualizing the numbers.
Addition with markers: Ask Kelsey to choose two numbers (e.g., 3 and 2) and color that number of squares on the 10 frame. Then count the total colored squares to find the sum.
Story problems: Create simple addition story problems related to Kelsey's interests (e.g., "If you have 2 apples and I give you 3 more, how many do you have in total?"). Use the 10 frame to solve them.
Talking Points
"Let's color the squares on the 10 frame to make it fun and colorful!"
"Now, let's choose two numbers and color that many squares on the 10 frame. Then let's count them together."
"Imagine a story where you have some toys and you get more toys. How many toys do you have in all? Let's use the 10 frame to find out!"
