Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using toy cars, vehicles, action figures, and legos, and also learn how to tie knots.
Materials and Prep
- Toy cars
- Vehicles
- Action figures
- Legos
- Rope or string for knot tying
- No other materials are required
Activities
- Counting Cars: Line up your toy cars and count them out loud. Practice counting forward and backward.
- Car Addition: Take two cars and add them together. How many cars do you have now? Repeat with different combinations of cars.
- Car Subtraction: Start with a certain number of cars and remove some. How many cars are left? Practice different subtraction scenarios.
- Vehicle Patterns: Use your vehicles to create patterns. For example, line up a car, then a truck, then a car, then a truck. Can you continue the pattern?
- Building with Legos: Use your legos to build towers or structures. Count the number of legos you used for each creation.
- Tying Knots: Learn how to tie a basic knot using a rope or string. Practice tying and untying knots.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun with our toy cars, vehicles, action figures, and legos while also learning some math skills."
- "Let's start by counting our toy cars. Can you count them out loud with me? Great job!"
- "Now, let's add two cars together. If we have 3 cars and add 2 more, how many cars do we have in total? Let's find out!"
- "Subtraction is when we take away some cars. If we have 5 cars and remove 2, how many cars are left? Let's subtract and see."
- "Using our vehicles, we can create patterns. Can you help me continue the pattern of car, truck, car, truck?"
- "Legos are great for building. Let's build a tower and count how many legos we used. Ready?"
- "Lastly, let's learn how to tie knots. It's like making a special kind of knot with a rope or string. Can you try to tie a knot?"
