Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to confidently add and subtract single-digit numbers, understanding the concepts of addition and subtraction through engaging activities.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Crayons or colored pencils
- A timer (optional)
Before the lesson, ensure the student understands what addition and subtraction mean. Review some basic examples if necessary.
Activities
-
Addition and Subtraction Art:
Have the student draw a big tree. For each branch, they can add a certain number of apples, and then subtract some. They can color the apples and write the addition and subtraction equations next to them.
-
Math Story Time:
Ask the student to create a short story involving addition and subtraction. For example, "There were 3 birds on a tree, then 2 more came. How many are there now?" They can illustrate their story as well.
-
Number Hunt:
Hide small pieces of paper around the room with numbers on them. The student will find them and then create addition and subtraction problems using the numbers they find.
-
Math Relay Race:
Set up a relay race where the student has to run to a designated spot, solve a math problem, and then run back to the starting point. This can be timed for added fun!
Talking Points
- "What happens when we put two numbers together? That's called addition!"
- "When we take away a number from another, we are doing subtraction. Can you tell me what you think that means?"
- "Let's try to think of a real-life example of addition. Can you think of something you can add together?"
- "Subtraction is like taking away your toys. If you have 5 toys and give 2 away, how many do you have left?"
- "Adding is like counting your friends when they come over. If 3 friends come and then 2 more, how many friends do you have now?"
- "When we do math, we can use pictures or stories to help us understand better. What do you think?"
- "Math can be fun and creative! Let’s see how many fun ways we can add and subtract today!"
