Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and understand patterns in stories through repetition. They will gain confidence in their reading skills by practicing reading familiar phrases and sentences, making reading a fun and enjoyable experience.

Materials and Prep

  • A selection of simple storybooks with repetitive phrases (you can use your favorite stories!)
  • A cozy reading nook or space to sit comfortably
  • A set of colorful markers or crayons for drawing
  • Blank paper for drawing or writing

Before the lesson, choose a few storybooks that have repetitive phrases or patterns. Familiarize yourself with the stories so you can ask engaging questions during reading.

Activities

  • Story Time

    Read a chosen storybook together, emphasizing the repetitive phrases. Encourage the student to read along with you when they feel comfortable. Make it fun by using different voices for characters!

  • Pattern Hunt

    After reading, ask the student to identify the patterns or repeated phrases in the story. You can say, "Can you find the words that keep coming back?" This will help them recognize the importance of repetition in stories.

  • Draw Your Story

    Have the student draw a picture of their favorite part of the story. Encourage them to add speech bubbles with the repeated phrases. This will help reinforce their understanding of the story's pattern.

  • Story Creation

    Guide the student to create their own short story using a repetitive phrase. They can use their drawings to illustrate the story. Ask them, "What fun things can happen with your special phrase?"

  • Story Performance

    Let the student perform their story for you or even for family members. Encourage them to use expression and repeat their favorite phrases loudly and clearly. You can say, "Let’s make it a fun show!"

  • "Can you say that part with me? It sounds so fun!"
  • "Why do you think the author used that phrase again?"
  • "Look at your drawing! How does it tell the story?"
  • "You did an amazing job reading! How do you feel about your story?"
