Objective
By the end of this lesson, Willow will understand the basics of growing seeds, including what seeds need to grow and how to take care of them. She will also explore her creativity through art, practice her reading and writing skills, and learn some simple math concepts related to measuring and counting.
Materials and Prep
- Seeds (any type Willow wants to grow)
- Soil (can be gathered from the garden or a pot)
- Small pots or containers (can be recycled containers like yogurt cups)
- Water
- Paper and crayons/markers for drawing
- Measuring cup (for water)
Before the lesson, gather all the materials and find a sunny spot where Willow can plant her seeds. Make sure to have a plan for watering them regularly.
Activities
-
Planting Seeds:
Willow will fill her pots with soil, plant the seeds according to the instructions, and water them. This hands-on activity will help her understand what seeds need to grow.
-
Seed Growth Chart:
Willow will create a simple chart to track the growth of her seeds. She can measure the height of the plants each week and record it in her chart, practicing her counting and writing skills.
-
Seed Art:
Using paper, crayons, and markers, Willow will draw pictures of the seeds she planted and what she thinks they will look like when they grow. This will encourage her creativity and imagination.
-
Story Time:
Willow will read a short story about seeds or plants. After reading, she can talk about what she learned and how it relates to her own planting experience.
Talking Points
- "What do you think seeds need to grow? Can you guess?"
- "Let's look at our seeds! Do they look different? How?"
- "How much water do you think our seeds need? Let’s measure it together!"
- "Can you draw a picture of what you think your plant will look like when it grows?"
- "What are some things we need to do to take care of our seeds?"
- "Why do you think plants are important for us and the world?"
