Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a clear understanding of the feedback provided on their comprehension passage, be able to identify areas for improvement, and develop strategies to enhance their reading comprehension skills in the future.

Materials and Prep

  • Corrected comprehension passage with teacher's feedback
  • Notebook or journal for notes
  • Pens or pencils
  • Timer for activities (optional)

Before the lesson, ensure that the student has reviewed their comprehension passage and the feedback provided. Encourage them to think critically about their answers and be open to discussion.

Activities

  • Feedback Discussion:

Start with a discussion about the feedback provided on the comprehension passage. Ask the student to share their thoughts on the feedback and any surprises they encountered. This will help them process the information and understand the reasoning behind the corrections.

  • Peer Review Simulation:

Have the student take on the role of a teacher and provide feedback on a new comprehension passage (real or fictional). This will help them understand the perspective of the evaluator and reinforce their learning.

  • Strategy Brainstorming:

Work together to brainstorm strategies for improving reading comprehension. This could include techniques like summarizing paragraphs, questioning the text, or making predictions. Encourage the student to write down these strategies in their notebook for future reference.

  • Reflection Writing:

Ask the student to write a short reflection on what they learned from the feedback and how they plan to apply it in their future reading assignments. This will help solidify their understanding and commitment to improvement.

Talking Points

  • "Feedback is a tool for growth. It’s not just about what went wrong, but how you can improve next time."
  • "When you review your answers, think about why the correct answer is better. What makes it more accurate?"
  • "Imagine you’re the teacher. What advice would you give to help someone else who made similar mistakes?"
  • "Reading comprehension is like a puzzle. Each piece (or question) helps you understand the bigger picture!"
  • "What strategies have worked for you in the past? Let’s make a list of those and add new ones today."
  • "Reflection is key. How do you feel about the feedback? What will you do differently next time?"
