Objective
By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a foundational understanding of architecture and blueprint reading. He will be able to identify basic architectural elements, read simple blueprints, and apply critical thinking and logic to design his own small structure.
Materials and Prep
- Graph paper
- Pencil and eraser
- Ruler
- Books or articles on architecture (can be found online)
- Access to a computer or tablet for research
- Basic cooking ingredients for home ec activity
- ASL resources (videos or apps) for learning basic signs related to architecture
Before the lesson, ensure that Jordan has access to the resources mentioned above and understands basic concepts of measurement and geometry.
Activities
- Blueprint Reading Exercise: Jordan will be given a simple blueprint of a house. He will identify different rooms and features, such as doors, windows, and dimensions. This will help him understand how to read architectural plans.
- Design Your Own Room: Using graph paper, Jordan will design his dream room, incorporating elements he learned from the blueprint reading exercise. He will measure out the dimensions and create a scaled drawing.
- ASL Vocabulary Development: Jordan will learn basic ASL signs related to architecture and home design, such as "house," "room," and "door." This will enhance his communication skills in a fun way.
- Cooking Challenge: In home ec, Jordan will prepare a simple recipe that requires measuring ingredients. This will connect his understanding of measurement in cooking to the measurements used in architecture.
- Critical Thinking Puzzle: Jordan will solve a logic puzzle related to building design, such as figuring out how to arrange furniture in his designed room efficiently. This will develop his critical thinking skills.
Talking Points
- "Architecture is not just about buildings; it's about creating spaces where people live, work, and play." This emphasizes the importance of architecture in everyday life.
- "Reading blueprints is like reading a map. If you can understand the symbols and lines, you can visualize the final product." This will help him grasp the significance of blueprint reading.
- "Every great architect starts with a simple idea. What will your idea be for your dream room?" Encourages creativity and personal expression.
- "In ASL, we can communicate about our designs even if we can't speak. What signs do you think are essential for discussing architecture?" This promotes inclusivity and understanding of different communication methods.
- "Cooking is a lot like architecture; both require precise measurements to create something great. How do you think they are similar?" This connects different subjects through practical application.
