Objective
By the end of this lesson, Cayn will understand key themes in the Percy Jackson series, learn about Greek mythology, and connect historical elements to the story. Cayn will also practice reading comprehension and creative thinking through engaging activities.
Materials and Prep
- Percy Jackson book (any book from the series)
- Notebook and pencil for notes and activities
- Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper) for drawing
- Access to a quiet reading space
Before the lesson, make sure Cayn has read at least the first few chapters of the Percy Jackson book. This will help him engage with the activities more effectively.
Activities
-
Character Exploration:
Cayn will pick his favorite character from the book and write a short description of them. He can include their personality traits, special powers, and what makes them interesting. This will help him understand character development.
-
Mythology Mapping:
Using a large sheet of paper, Cayn will create a mind map that connects characters from Percy Jackson to the Greek gods and myths they are based on. This visual representation will help him see the connections between the story and real mythology.
-
Creative Drawing:
Cayn will draw a scene from the book that he found exciting or interesting. He can add speech bubbles to show what the characters might be saying. This activity encourages creativity and helps reinforce what he has read.
-
Story Prediction:
After discussing the chapters read, Cayn will predict what he thinks will happen next in the story. He can write or share his ideas and reasoning. This will help improve his critical thinking skills.
Talking Points
- "What do you think makes Percy a hero? Is it his bravery, friendship, or something else?"
- "Can you tell me about one Greek god or goddess you learned about? What are their powers?"
- "How do you think the adventures in Percy Jackson relate to ancient myths? Can you find any similarities?"
- "What was your favorite part of the story so far? Why did you like it?"
- "If you could have any power like Percy or his friends, what would it be and why?"
