Objective

By the end of this lesson, Willow will be able to understand and perform simple addition and subtraction using fun Ryan’s World characters and themes. She will be able to solve basic math problems while engaging with her favorite characters!

Materials and Prep

  • Ryan’s World character cards (you can draw or print them out)
  • Colorful markers or crayons
  • Paper for drawing and writing
  • Small toys or objects (like blocks or buttons) for counting
  • Space to play and work comfortably

Before the lesson, make sure to have a fun area set up where Willow can easily access the materials and feel excited about learning with Ryan’s World characters!

Activities

  • Character Counting: Use the Ryan’s World character cards to count how many characters there are. Willow can group them in different ways (e.g., by color or type) and then count them together.

  • Addition Adventure: Create simple addition problems using the characters. For example, “If we have 2 Ryan cards and we add 3 more, how many do we have now?” Use toys or objects to help visualize the addition.

  • Subtraction Safari: For subtraction, use the characters again. “If we start with 5 characters and we give away 2, how many do we have left?” Again, use objects to help Willow see the process of taking away.

  • Draw and Solve: Have Willow draw her own Ryan’s World characters and create her own addition and subtraction problems based on her drawings. This will make her feel involved and creative!

  • Math Story Time: Create a short story involving Ryan and his friends where they go on an adventure that includes adding and subtracting characters. Willow can help narrate the story and solve the math problems along the way.

Talking Points

  • "Willow, can you count how many Ryan cards we have? Let’s count together!"
  • "If we have 2 Ryans and we get 3 more, how many do we have? Let’s use our toys to help us count!"
  • "If we start with 5 characters and we give 2 away, how many do we have left? Let’s take them away and see!"
  • "What if you draw your own characters? How many can you create? Let’s make some math problems with them!"
  • "Let’s tell a story about Ryan and his friends! What happens when they meet new characters? How many do they have?"
