Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and write both lowercase and capital letters, as well as solve simple word problems using these letters. The student will feel confident in their ability to read and write basic words and solve fun math problems!
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or crayon
- Whiteboard or any flat writing surface (optional)
- Timer (optional for fun challenges)
Before the lesson, ensure the student is familiar with the alphabet and basic numbers. You can practice a few letters and numbers together to warm up!
Activities
-
Letter Matching Game:
Write a mix of lowercase and capital letters on one side of the paper. On the other side, write the corresponding letters in a different order. Ask the student to draw lines connecting the matching letters. This will help them recognize the differences between uppercase and lowercase letters!
-
Word Problem Adventure:
Create simple word problems using fun scenarios (like animals or toys). For example, "If you have 2 teddy bears and you get 1 more, how many teddy bears do you have now?" The student can draw pictures to represent the problems and write down the answers!
-
Letter Art:
Encourage the student to create a piece of art using letters! They can write their name in big letters and decorate it with drawings that start with those letters. For example, if their name is "Sam," they can draw a sun, apple, and monkey around their name!
-
Alphabet Hop:
Write letters on pieces of paper and spread them out on the floor. Call out a letter, and the student has to hop to that letter. This is a fun way to get them moving while reinforcing letter recognition!
Talking Points
- "Can you tell me what this letter is? Is it big or small?"
- "Let’s count how many letters are in your name! How many do you see?"
- "If you have 3 apples and I give you 2 more, how many do you have? Let’s draw it out!"
- "What sound does this letter make? Can you think of a word that starts with this letter?"
- "Great job! Now let’s make a fun picture using the letters we learned today!"
